What Do You Consider To Be The Best Guitar Solos/Guitar Licks Ever ?

Post by yurigagarin » Sun Jun 02, 2019 9:37 am

Reading and enjoying a thread on romantic song lyrics got me thinking about my own particular music tastes.
So I'd like to put this question to my forum friends out there:
In your opinion, what do you consider to have been the best guitar solos and guitar riffs ?

To kick off these are certainly some of the most recognizable solos and riffs that I enjoy the most:

Sunshine Of Your Love: Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton
Smoke On The Water: Ritchie Blackmore
Kashmir: Jimmy Page
Man On The Silver Mountain: Ritchie Blackmore
Whole Lotta Love: Jimmy Page's treatment
Ziggy Stardust: Mick Ronson

And here are the solos:

Stairway To Heaven (final solo): Jimmy Page
Highway Star: Ritchie Blackmore
Sultans Of Swing: Mark Knopfler
Time and Comfortably Numb: Dave Gilmour

I'm sure there are many others that are awesome, which I also like just fine, but as yet I haven't had time to mention them all.
Lets have your choices folks !

I'm a guitar player myself, but not electric, I love the acoustic guitar.
I'm into the delicate fingerpicking folk music stuff. Anyone else into this type of music ?

So, the best 'licks' for me, are probably ragtime stuff, by Tommy Emmanuel, Richard Smith, etc, as they play a lot of Chet Atkins style pieces.

This is an example - Richard Smith playing 'the entertainer', I wish I was a quarter as good - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCGGG9piAGY

Mark Knopfler every time. This man is a guitar genius, who - in my eyes - can do no wrong.

The fact that he also happens to own a classic Austin Healey 1000S has nothing whatsoever to do with it - though I am insanely jealous!
